Fire Protection District 5 was established in 1976 and is presently located in East Baton Rouge Parish. The East Side Fire Department 2 career and 20 volunteer firefighters operate from one station. They serve more than 18,000 people in an area of 8 square miles. Fire Department units are dispatched according to information received by the 9-1-1 operator. The crew is well trained in fire suppression, emergency first-aid with defibrillation, vehicle extrication, confined space rescue, high-angle rope rescue and dive rescue/recovery.

State-of-the art equipment and apparatus are used by the skilled firefighters for unexpected emergencies such as structure fires, grass and trash fires, rescues, and emergency medical incidents. Fire prevention activities include public education in such areas as emergency medical care, CPR, fire extinguisher use, home fire safety, wildland fire safety, and proper use of the 911 emergency telephone number. More than 1323 are received at the East Side Fire Department 5 a year.
